This year, when I put on my posted on Instagram looking for rising seniors to join my Senior Model Team, I had a girl (in middle school) reach out and suggest a team for younger teens. She said “I just know school is hard for some people and modeling would help them by giving them self confidence and believe that they are beautiful even when people say the aren’t.” She is so right.
So, because she reached out, I decided to offer a Teen Model Team this year. The Teen Model Team is for girls ages 13-16. Being a part of the team means you get to be a part of creative group shoots and activities.
I think she’s right about building self confidence. That is the whole reason I do this. I believe we have to empower our daughters, and it doesn’t just come from looking pretty. That’s not what this is about. This is about giving these girls self confidence, allowing them to feel comfortable in different situations, with new people. And I’ve had first hand experience that when a young girl feels beautiful it shines from the inside out. So often I hear girls say, I don’t like my this or my that, but the more times you see beautiful images of yourself, the fewer times you see those things you didn’t like about yourself.
And it’s not about perfection and it’s not about looking like a model. None of us are perfect. It’s about letting your unique beauty shine through, and feeling comfortable in your skin. And the team is about making a safe space to be yourself, and supporting each other- building relationships and confidence.
