5 key tips to plan a smooth branding session

Every great session starts with a solid plan.

Helping you plan your personal branding or headshot session is one of my favorite parts of the whole process.  It helps me get to know you and learn your intentions for your business/brand and it helps you get a clear vision for the message that you want to convey.

Here are 5 key tips to plan a smooth branding session.

  1. Consider your brand.  This means thinking about your message, your brand colors, your target clients, etc.  I will send a questionnaire that will not only help me understand you and your brand, but will also get you thinking about specific ways we can show your brand.  I recommend creating a Pinterest board to help you see what you are drawn to and what we can work towards.
  2. Tell the story of your business or your brand.  Your new images will go alongside your words. They will help fill in the gaps in your ideal clients mind about what you do and how you do it. We want them to be able to envision what working with you would look like.  We will choose locations based on what you want to show your client that you do.
  3. Communicate.  No question is a bad question!  Like I said earlier, the preplanning is one of my favorite parts so please communicate with me about what you like and what you want from your session.  Need help choosing your outfit? Don’t know if you should hire a hair and makeup artist?  Worried that you will look uncomfortable/awkward in your photos?  Almost everyone has questions, so just ask!   I want to make this as easy and painless as possible for you.
  4. Practice posing.  Seems silly, I know, but practicing in the mirror to see what angles look good on you really helps. And doing it in the outfits you are considering for your session is also a great idea. You need to see how your outfit will look from all angles- sitting, standing, leaning, walking etc!
  5. Confidence is the most beautiful thing you can wear.  Just be yourself + be comfortable and you will shine bright in your photos!

Prior to Ella’s session, we talked through all of these things. As an artist, she wanted to show the scope of her work and show her working. She wanted to show her process and her space. She wanted to show her sweet pup, who is often in her studio with her. It was important to get images that show Ella as an artist and also who she is as a human being.

To see more of her work (and how she used her images from our session), you can visit Ella’s website here.
