College Grad Session: 5 “Must Have” Shots

July 27, 2022

< back to blog home

The time has come. You’re graduating college! You have worked long and hard to get to this point in your life and now you get to throw your cap in the air and say, “I did it!” This is a milestone season in life, which is why it’s one of my favorites to capture! In today’s post, I’m bringing you five shots that make for a fun and memorable college grad session. These shots provide for great variety in the final gallery. And they are the images that you’ll want to have when you look back on this season of your life!

Shot #1: Classic Cap and Gown

This one might be a given, but I make sure to have my seniors bring their cap and gown, in addition to their “normal attire” outfits. These photos are great for graduation announcements, thank you cards, and just to have as a keepsake of this special time!

Shot #2: Professional Headshots

This is the shot that I feel gets left out of most senior sessions. Headshots are so important as you enter the “career” phase of life and what better time to take them than at your college grad session? You’ll be glad you have these professional images to use on your resume, for your Linkedin profile or any other time you need a great “bio” shot!

Shot #3: Celebrate!

This is where we get to have some fun! Whether it’s popping a bottle of champagne or throwing a bunch of confetti in the air, I will make sure that we get a shot that celebrates this momentous time! Like I mentioned earlier, you’ve worked so hard to get to graduation – long hours of studying and dedication to your classes – you deserve to be celebrated! During the planning phase of your grad session, we’ll talk through which “celebratory” shot feels the most like you so that you can bring the right props!

Shot #4: With Your Friends

If there is one thing that makes each college experience unique and unforgettable, it’s the friends you make while you’re there! The people you do life with during the college years can become some of the most important in your life. When you look back on these photos, shouldn’t those important friends be there?! I always encourage my grads to bring a few close friends to their session to capture this time together. I’ve even had grads schedule their sessions back to back to make it easier to coordinate being photographed together!

Shot #5: Campus Favorite

You’ve spent the last four years on your college campus which makes it a pretty special place. I want to include a few of your favorite campus hang outs in your images! Again, we’ll discuss this in the planning phase, but you can start thinking now of those areas on campus where you love to spend time. Maybe it’s a library or favorite study spot. It could be an outdoor area where you like to spend recreational time. Whatever makes your campus special to you, we want to capture that in your grad photos!
